A Brief History...
Wayne County DHSEM has invested nearly a million dollars in UASI grant dollars in GIS enhancements to include funding Wayne County's portion of the 2005 SEMCOG Regional Ortho flight, the 2006 Pictometry Oblique flight, the servers to warehouse this imagery, and various other GIS components such as GPS data collectors.
In 2002, SEMCOG contacted Wayne County DHSEM and stated it had received color ortho imagery from the USGS following a project they had conducted in southeastern Michigan. SEMCOG worked diligently to convert the imagery to the County's coordinate system and prepared individual community image mosaics. Wayne County DHSEM then helped get that imagery out to the various communities and neighboring counties.
The 2002 USGS imagery is free federal data and is available to anyone wishing to obtain it. You can get by either visiting our FTP site (click on FTP Site button above and go to the "GIS-Data" folder and then to the "Imagery" folder) or by emailing a request to Jay Timko to have CD's or DVD's published for you. If you are a local community and need large areas of the imagery, it can be uploaded to an external hard drive for you to come pick up and then offload the data to your server.
In 2005, SEMCOG conducted a regional project by which the seven counties making up southeastern Michigan could collectively obtain updated ortho imagery for their county at a drastic savings by flying at the same time. Whereas it normally costs over $300,000 to fly ortho imagery for Wayne County, by participating in the regional flight, the cost came down to $85,000. Wayne County DHSEM funded Wayne County's share of the cost for this project. This updated ortho imagery has been delivered to Wayne County on 12 Sep 2006. This imagery will be delivered to all 43 communities free of charge and will be made available via our FTP site, CD/DVD's, or external hard drive.
Also in 2005, Pictometry demonstrated the power of oblique imagery and what it could introduce to the County in terms of public safety and homeland security initiatives. Wayne County DHSEM allocated grant dollars to fund the initial flight of the entire County. This imagery has been delivered and takes up 450Gb of disk space. The imagery was then sectioned up by community for delivery since most communities won't have 450Gb of disk space laying around. Communities are welcome to take any and all imagery that they have disk space for. |
